ABOUT THE BREED

Shih Tzu Puppy Indiana

Shih Tzus love people, children, and other dogs. They are usually very kind and not afraid of any people. Personalities vary, but in general these dogs are very friendly and meant to be a companion. They are small dogs. Generally will mature to be around 9-16 pounds. Some Shih Tzus are smaller and "imperial" sized about 4-8 pounds. Small children will need to be supervised when playing with these dogs. They are lively, intelligent, and alert. Typically are very heavily coated, which does require grooming. There are many different colors and marking combinations which make these dogs so beautiful. The eyes are wide-set with an undershot jaw and a square, short muzzle. Since the Shih Tzu is heavily coated with short faces, they do not tolerate heat well. It is important to be mindful of how long your Shih Tzu is outside. It is also noted that they are not typically good swimmers. Shih Tzu puppies usually snort and bubble while teething, but this should pass as he/she matures. Shih Tzus are not picky eaters. Puppies are usually fed three times a day until they are about six months old, then two meals a day until they reach their first birthday. After the first birthday, they can continue the feeding schedule or be reduced down to one meal a day. Shih Tzus have hair, like humans, instead of fur. If the hair is not brushed frequently, it may tangle and mat. Mats should be removed before bathing or they may set in.

Training your Shih Tzu can be frustrating because they will probably try and charm you into getting their way. Since Shih Tzus are people dogs using praise is the best way to train, instead of discipline. We love our Shih Tzus so much and truly believe this breed to be one of the best for companionship.
